"My work is like a bird's eye view of the landscape. I paint bog land, the Burren and the islands. I concentrate on the effect rather than merely depicting the scene. I think this achieves a delicate balance of abstract and representational imagery through hues of colour, tone and form."

Michael Gemmell studied Art at the College of Art in Limerick & Dublin. He exhibits regularly throughout Ireland, and he is represented at the annual RHA exhibition.

Michael works in oils. Not satisfied with a naturalistic rendering of a scene, wide brushstrokes of dark slabs of earth float on thickly painted and contrasting lighter diverse textural surfaces, giving his work a monumental serene aspect while evoking sensations of vast space.

Finding a unique way of working on his own, further proof of the infinite potential of the oil paint, his predilection of roads and passages leading into his painting appears to reveal an influence of Corot. However Michael concentrates on the effect rather than merely realistically depicting the scene, and so achieves a delicate balance of abstract and representational imagery through hues of colour, tone and form.

The beauty of his work lies in the ability to express a spiritual peace through the landscape setting that is common to most of his work and the vibrant luxuriousness of the paintings convey a calm beauty revealing the power of nature in all its glory.
